Acne: Acne in African-Americans can cause long lasting discolorations to the skin. The etiology of acne is unknown. However, acne can result from several factors such an increase in hormone levels. In males testosterone or androgens. In females, androgens respectively. An increased oil production can clog the pores with oil or sebum ( white thick substance) which cause the cell walls of the pores in the skin to breakdown. Another issue in African-American skin care is ingrown hairs. While we often think that this only affects men, a large number of African-American women suffer from unwanted facial hair and as a result of shaving they get painful razor bumps. African-Americans have very course hair that is curved and often as a result of a close shave the curved hair will curl back into the skin causing painful and irritated razor bumps.

Hyper Pigmentation of the skin:African American skin has larger melanosomes (cells that determine skin color ) and the melanosomes contain more of the pigment melanin than those found in white skin. Because of the protective effect of melanin, African-Americans are better protected against skin cancer and premature wrinkling from sun exposure. Post inflammatory hyper pigmentation is quite common in dark skinned individuals, even after minor trauma. An area of the skin may darken after an injury such as a cut or a scrape, or after certain skin disorders such as acne. To avoid or reduce post inflammatory hyper pigmentation, avoid picking and harsh scrubbing.
